Biosafety practices

Dear Friends,
Here are some brief point I have taken from presentation of my colleague (presented during his SRFship) Pushpendra Singh Chahar, Post Doctoral Fellow, Prof Stewart Cole Laboratory (UPCOL), Lausanne, Switzerland.

There are several Bio-hazards materials used in Research laboratories which needs serious precaution. The materials, originated from biological substance, having capacity to produce deleterious effects on human or animals are known as Bio-Hazards material. And the application of procedures, facilities, laboratory equipment and rules are BIOSAFETY .

The agents (biosafety material) can be distributed in four risk groups (RG).
  1. RG1- the agents which are not associated with diseases in healthy humans. these agents do not require any special laboratory requirement. And there packaging also not need any declaration of Dangerous goods during shipment.
  2. RG2- these agents are rarely cause serious diseases. and diseases caused by them have proper prevention and therapy. They require BIOSAFETY II level laboratory for study. The goods needs declaration of HAZARDOUS material during shipment.
  3. RG3- these agents cause serious and lethal disease but do not have community risks. It require BIOSAFETY III Level laboratory for study. The packaging should clearly indicates declaration of hazardous material during shipment.
  4. RG4- these agents cause serious lethal illness to humans as well as community. And generally diseases do not have any preventive or therapeutic interventions. Such materials must be studied only BIOSAFETY IV level laboratory.

To be continued.....
