Politics and Scientist

Whats in a name.... A group discussion was read by me on "The Scientist.com" forum.... The debate was regarding changed Name of Swine flu; Influenza A/(H1N1) virus.

The debate pointed out that....
1. comparative immunity of people over 50 to the virus is that such a strain spread in humans before. So did humans transmit it to swine sometime before 1950? all of the labels for avian flu, swine flu, human flu, are just a historical artifact of the moment in time that people began sequencing. In a longer time frame, have they really been moving back and forth between species at will, with just a handful of mutations?

2. In 1998 the North American swine/avian/human mix started at farms in North Carolina, and spread from there. It was not tracked even in the U.S. and not in Mexico. People complained about giant hog farms with huge stinking sewage lagoons about ways of testing and re-mediating emissions. But nothing was done about it - People just started importing pork from Mexico and inflicting this stuff on Mexicans. Now this disease has spreaded and kill thousands of people, and we know, if we didn't eat pork we wouldn't have this problem.

3. there are many smaller family farms in Mexico in the hog business and they are the ones that are hurting the most from uneducated people boycotting pork (In a period of recession). The factory farms can absorb this blow, but the small farmers can't. And you may get logic by this we should stop getting beef because of E. coli O157:H7 and chicken for Salmonella, deer carry a host of infectious diseases and others for their associated diseases with them as well. Cooking pork sufficiently can be tender, moist and delicious.

Voting rate in India...

I cast my vote and this experience was very well unexpected... India Electrol Commission have campaigned so much to pull voters to the polling booth.... In my constituency there were two polling booth and its really not imagined by me that one booth was empty and another one have a Que of only fifty to hundred people ... however there are total approximately eight hundred voters in this constituency...
Up to evening there were only 42% votes (as per newspapers) were cast.... It must be 100% in city like Agra...
